Our Treasures Abroad, London: 3000 year old Egyptian coffin lid found in house clearance in UK
An Egyptian coffin lid thought to be almost 3000 years old has been found by an auctioneer from near Cambridge.
Stephen Drake of Willingham Auctions spotted it during a house clearance in Essex. Experts believe it is authentic, although the face was re-painted by the late owner.
Discovering the sarcophagus was "an exciting find", Mr Drake added. "It really felt like a scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. I wish I'd had my whip and trilby with me."
Mr Drake said he had asked an expert at the British Museum to comment on the age and historical significance of the sarcophagus.
Experts believe it could date from around 700BC, but it's not yet known whose coffin it was, or how the late owner acquired it.
When the coffin lid is auctioned it's hoped it will go to someone who can restore it and perhaps discover which ancient Egyptian was laid to rest - under it.
