News: Tourism minister expects growing number of US tourists to Egypt in 2015
Tourism Minister Hisham Zaazou, currently visiting the US, expects a “growing tourist flow” from the US to Egypt after striking many initial deals with US travel agencies.
Speaking to Egyptian reporters in Washington, Zaazou said he held many meetings with US businessmen and US airline companies, including Delta Airlines, to increase the number of tourists coming to Egypt.
According to the latest statistics, the number of American tourists visiting Egypt reached 147,000 in 2013, 60 percent down from the number in 2010 in which nearly 361,000 tourists visited the country.
Zaazou denied claims that American tourists were not welcome in Egypt. “Political disagreements between the countries do not affect relations between the people,” Zaazou said.
As for the impact of the recent closures of the British and Canadian embassies in Cairo on tourism in Egypt, Zaazou said the step was not prompted by definite security threats but because the two embassies sought more security measures around their headquarters.
“This is a temporary closure as announced by the two embassies and the issue will be settled within days,” Zaazou said.
