News: 4th Round of ‘Explore Your Country’ Tourism Initiative in Sharm El-Sheikh
CAIRO: A total of 2,259 students from several Egyptian universities arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh Sunday as a part of a campaign to boost the country’s tourism industry, Youm7 reported.
As part of a comprehensive strategy to support the sector, which is a major contributor to the national economy, The Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sport launched the “Explore Your Country,” campaign following the notable decrease in number of tourists visiting Sharm el Sheikh in the wake of the Russian plane that crashed over Sinai in late October, Youth and Sports Minister Khaled Abdel Aziz told Youm7.
“The students arrived in Sharm al Sheikh on board of 52 buses and they are scheduled to spend three nights in the Red Sea resort where they embarked on exploring the city’s landmarks,” said Abdel Aziz. This is the fourth batch to arrive in Sharm al Sheikh since the campaign kicked off early November, he added.
Egypt’s tourism sector, which represents 11 percent of the country’s GDP, has been suffering from ongoing shocks ever since the 2011 uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak. Despite a few instances of apparent recovery, instability and political turmoil continue to challenge the sector.
