Recovered Artifacts, UK: Antique Mamluk Lantern Returned to Egyptian Embassy in London
The lantern belonged to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, the first capital of Egypt under the Islamic rule; the area is now part of Old Cairo.
The owner voluntarily turned the antique in to the embassy after it proved the lantern was illegitimately brought to the U.K, the ministry stated, adding that the owner “expressed his keenness on preserving the Egyptian Islamic heritage.”
The Mamluk Sultanate lasted from 1250 to 1517. The said lantern belongs to the era of Sultan Barquq, who ruled in the 1380s and 1390s.
